Felix Auger-Aliassime advances with opening-round win at U.S. Open

Felix Auger-Aliassime, the third-ranked player at the U.S. Open, advanced to the second round of the tournament with a hard-fought victory on Monday night. The Montreal native, known for his resilience, battled through a lengthy match that lasted three hours and 19 minutes, including a 55-minute rain delay in the second set. Auger-Aliassime, who has known his Australian opponent, Rinky Hijiata, since childhood, emerged victorious with a scoreline of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The Canadian star showcased his skills by hitting 17 aces, generating 48 winners, and committing just 11 double faults throughout the match. However, he was not without flaws, committing 50 unforced errors. Auger-Aliassime's consistent service games, with 18 wins out of 22, and effective return games, with six wins out of 21, played a significant role in his triumph.

Auger-Aliassime will face Russian Karen Khachanov in the next round. Khachanov, who hails from Tbilisi, Georgia, emerged victorious in his previous match against Roman Burruchaga of Argentina, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov, another Canadian player based in Richmond Hill, Ont., will take on German Luca Van Assche in the second round on Wednesday.

Shapovalov, who defeated Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in four sets on Sunday, will face Van Assche, who beat Cameron Norrie of Britain in four sets earlier in the week.

Leylah Fernandez, a rising star from Laval, Que., is scheduled to play her second-round match on Wednesday against Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew. Fernandez, who upset China's Shuai Zhang in straight sets on Sunday, will take on Sawangkaew, who defeated Hungary's Panna Udvardy in straight sets.
