Lee confident of HK fighting spirit in Asian Games

Chief Executive John Lee expressed confidence on Tuesday that Hong Kong's 580-strong contingent at the Asian Games in Nagoya will exceed the achievements of past teams. He emphasized the Hong Kong athletes' outstanding performances in previous Asian Games, particularly the record-breaking haul of eight gold, 16 silver and 29 bronze medals at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou.

Lee believes the team will carry forward the fighting spirit demonstrated at the National Games, striving for even better results. He stressed that high-level competitions are not only a test of athletes' skills and willpower but also an opportunity for cultural understanding and friendship. Committee president Timothy Fok acknowledged the logistical challenges posed by the multi-city event but assured the athletes of the SF&OC's support to help them focus on delivering strong performances.

The contingent's chef de mission, Wong Po-kee, noted the reduced number of athletes this time compared to the 2023 edition, but stressed the goal of achieving results on par with the last Games. Most athletes will depart for Japan on September 16 and 18. Star fencer Edgar Cheung, a two-time Olympic champion and reigning Asian Games men's individual foil gold medallist, aims to win a gold medal in the team event, building on previous silver and bronze finishes.

His teammate Ryan Choi, recovering from an injury, aims to step onto the piste in peak condition by the end of the next two weeks.
