Pandelela’s age no barrier as experience fuels Asian Games bid, says coach

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — Despite her age, national diver Datuk Pandelela Rinong remains confident of achieving success at the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, as per her coach Ooi Tze Liang. Tze Liang believes Pandelela's extensive experience sets her apart and emphasizes the importance of maintaining her optimal physical condition for peak performance. The coach is currently planning a training camp in China to enhance her overall well-being.

At 33 years old, Pandelela is the most experienced diver in the national team and will compete in the women's 10-metre platform event at the Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. The coach underscores the significance of motivation and consistency, urging Pandelela not to be swayed by negative opinions from others, particularly those found on social media.

Tze Liang, who has been Pandelela's coach since her early years, encourages the young athlete to focus on the present and trust the process. He also anticipates Pandelela to have a positive influence on her fellow competitors, as she will be mentoring both Nur Eilisha Rania Muhammad Abrar and Yong Rui Jie, who will be making their Asian Games debuts. For Tze Liang, the primary goal is to ensure consistent training and continuous progress for all athletes, rather than solely aiming for medal victories.
