Heavy rain lashes twin cities, inundates low-lying areas

A series of heavy rains hit the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Tuesday morning, causing extensive flooding in low-lying areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that the water level in Leh Nullah surged to 29 feet at Kattarian and 23.5 feet at Gawalmandi. Due to the relentless downpour, 200mm of rain was recorded in the catchment areas of Leh Nullah, prompting the district administration to declare a holiday for educational institutions.

The Planning Minister, Ahsan Iqbal, warned of "urban flooding risks in low-lying areas" and declared all relief and emergency departments on high alert to manage drainage and ensure safety. The Pakistan Meteorological Department's data indicated that Saidpur received 104mm of rainfall, while Golra recorded 157mm. Rescue 1122 successfully evacuated 60 people from various areas, and Islamabad's deputy commissioner urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.

The water level in Rawal Dam surpassed the set limit, and the spillways were set to open at 2pm. The torrential rainfall also led to overflowing drains in some areas, causing water to inundate roads and basement areas. Islamabad traffic police advised motorists to use fog lights and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles due to water accumulation affecting traffic.

Journalists captured images of flooded areas with cars submerged up to half their height, highlighting the severity of the situation.
