Electricity essential for ‘dignified life’, rules Calcutta High Court in disputed property case

In a disputed property case, the Calcutta High Court emphasized the importance of electricity for a dignified life, refusing to interfere with the restoration of power to occupants of a dilapidated property. Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Arjun Ray Mukherjee, hearing the appeal, clarified that restoring electricity does not grant occupants the right to stay on the premises or acquire any equity in their favor.

The case also involved a broader dispute over the property's status and the rights of those residing there. The landlords argued that the occupants had no right to remain in the premises, citing its dilapidated condition and proceedings initiated by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The court held that its decision pertained solely to the issue of electricity supply, leaving the occupants' status unaffected.
