Sabah disaster committee urges public to limit outdoor activities as four districts record unhealthy API

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 1 — The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) has warned the public, especially vulnerable groups, to limit outdoor activities and avoid strenuous physical exertion due to unhealthy air pollutant index (API) levels recorded in four districts. With the air quality worsening, the committee advised children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with respiratory illnesses to exercise additional caution.

For those needing to go outdoors, wearing appropriate face masks, staying well-hydrated, maintaining hygiene post-outdoor activities, and ensuring proper indoor ventilation are recommended. Kota Kinabalu recorded the highest API reading of 171, followed by Kimanis and Keningau at 156 each, while Tawau stood at 132. Sandakan was the only area with a moderate API reading of 91.

JPBN cautioned against open burning and urged residents to regularly check API updates and health guidelines from the DOE and health authorities. Anyone experiencing persistent coughing, shortness of breath, or chest pain should seek immediate medical attention. The committee will continue monitoring air quality conditions to evaluate risks and coordinate timely interventions.
