Brazil claims top cotton exporter spot over US with record revenue

Brazil has claimed the title of the world's top cotton exporter, surpassing the United States, according to new export revenue figures. In the latest commercial year, Brazil's cotton exports generated a record $5.3 billion, a 9% increase from the previous year. This marks a significant shift in the global cotton market, with Brazil now exporting 2.656 million tonnes compared to the US's 2.434 million tonnes. Australia trails behind with 1.241 million tonnes.

According to Abrapa's market intelligence coordinator, Danyella Bonfim, the rise in exports can be attributed to increased production, improved quality, traceability, and sustainability. The surge in demand is partially driven by trade tensions between the US and China, which have resulted in additional tariffs on US cotton, making Brazilian cotton a more attractive alternative.

China emerged as the largest buyer, importing 770,500 tonnes, or 23% of Brazil's total exports, up 309,200 tonnes from the previous year. Bangladesh also ramped up its imports by 173,200 tonnes, driven by the growth of its textile sector and a shift towards mechanised fibre. India, despite being a major cotton producer, has seen a surge in imports, partly due to the suspension of its 11% import tariff on cotton.

Brazil's strong position in the cotton market is further strengthened by its competitive pricing and logistical capabilities.
