A devastating collision involving a Pulau Pinang catamaran ferry occurred late last night, resulting in six passengers sustaining severe injuries, according to the Pulau Pinang Bomb squad. The accident, which involved 92 people, was reported by the department, with six individuals critically injured and taken to the hospital. "The situation at the terminal was under control," the department stated, as the injured passengers were taken to the hospital while others left the area.

This marks the first collision reported involving catamaran ferry services since they began operations in August 2023. Earlier reports from The Star indicated that the collision took place as the ferry was en route to Butterworth Ferry Terminal from Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal on the same island. PPC Chairman Yeoh Soon Hin noted in a statement that the incident involved the Teluk Bahang Ferry and the MV Mekar Jaya, both operating within the Pulau Pinang Port limits.

Based on initial information, MV Mekar Jaya was reported to be moving from Butterworth Inner Harbour to Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal. Ferry operations are continuing as normal and unaffected by the incident. The PPC and Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. will take all necessary steps to ensure the required follow-up actions are taken concerning the involved passengers and the safety and smooth functioning of port operations, they said.
