Song Sung-mun marks MLB return with RBI for Padres

San Diego Padres infielder Song Sung-mun made a strong return to Major League Baseball (MLB) by contributing an RBI. Playing for the Padres in a 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in Florida on Sunday, Song went 0-for-2 at the plate, but his actions on the field proved invaluable. Called up from Triple-A El Paso just prior to the game, the South Korean player started at third base and batted ninth.

In the third inning, Song lined out to center field, and in the fifth inning, he grounded out to shortstop Taylor Walls. However, in the seventh inning, with the Padres leading 2-1, Song executed a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Tampa Bay's third baseman Taylor Walls and extending the Padres' lead to two runs. Later, in the ninth inning, Song was intentionally walked but then orchestrated a double steal, combining with Xander Bogaerts to create another scoring opportunity.

Despite the Padres' eventual two-run failure in the bottom ninth to extend the game to extra innings, Song's performance showcased his speed and clutch instincts, adding to his impressive season numbers. Currently, Song is batting .198 with one home run, 16 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases in 63 games. Meanwhile, in another MLB game, South Korean shortstop Kim Ha-seong of the Atlanta Braves went 0-for-3 with a strikeout during his team's 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Truist Park in Atlanta. Kim is now batting .081, tallying only seven hits in 86 at-bats throughout his challenging season.
