Nepal floods: Bar association writes to CJI, Centre over missing retired Madras High Court judge Sivagnanam

The Madras Bar Association has penned a letter to the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of External Affairs, appealing for urgent assistance in locating retired Madras High Court judge V. Sivagnanam, who has gone missing amidst the catastrophic floods in Nepal since August 26, 2026. In a joint statement, the association's president V.R.

Kamalanathan and secretary J. Pothiraj revealed that Sivagnanam dedicated over three decades to the district judiciary before his appointment to the High Court in 2020, from which he retired in 2025. Upon retirement, Sivagnanam was bestowed with the prestigious status of a senior advocate by the Supreme Court. It was disclosed that the esteemed judge had embarked on a pilgrimage to Nepal alongside other Tamil devotees when the floods struck, leading to the tragic loss of 903 lives and the reported missing count reaching 4,247.

The Bar Association urged for intensified endeavors to locate Sivagnanam through consular channels, insisting on providing the family with a dedicated point of contact to receive verified updates.
