Nato’s Arctic moves pose ‘direct threat’ to Russia, Lavrov says

Moscow's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated in a recent article that Nato's expansion into the Arctic region poses a direct security threat to Russia. The alliance has been increasing its presence in the far north, particularly following Russia's war on Ukraine. In February, Nato launched a mission called Arctic Sentry to enhance its presence in the region, reflecting the alliance's heightened focus on the Arctic due to tensions with Russia and President Donald Trump's advocacy for acquiring Greenland.

Russia, which maintains a naval fleet, including nuclear-armed submarines, in the Arctic, considers the region to be within its sphere of interest. The country is also developing a shipping route to connect with Asian nations. Moscow has previously protested Nato's Arctic Sentry mission and, in the article, Lavrov, who serves as President Vladimir Putin's long-standing foreign minister, described Nato military exercises in the Arctic as "aggressive."

The foreign minister emphasized that such military activity in the Far North directly endangers Russia's security.

Russia boasts the largest military presence and the most extensive military infrastructure in the Arctic. In recent years, China has also begun to increase its activities in the mineral-rich area, often in collaboration with Moscow. Norway, Russia's neighbor, recently expanded a military brigade headquartered in the Arctic, adding to the Nato nations' efforts to bolster their defense footprint in the region following the start of Russia's 2022 war in Ukraine.
