Nato’s Arctic moves pose ‘direct threat’ to Russia, Lavrov says

Russia views NATO's growing presence in the Arctic as a direct security threat, according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. In an article published by the Russian foreign ministry, Lavrov stated that NATO military exercises in the region pose direct threats to Russia's security. The tensions between Russia and NATO have escalated since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In February, NATO launched a mission called Arctic Sentry to increase its presence in the far north, reflecting the alliance's heightened focus on the Arctic region amid its dispute with Russia. NATO's expansion in the Arctic comes after US President Donald Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland, a territory of strategic importance to the United States.

Russia, which operates a naval fleet equipped with nuclear-armed submarines in the Arctic, considers the region its sphere of interest. The country has recently developed a shipping route to connect with Asian nations. Moscow has previously protested NATO's Arctic Sentry mission and in this article, Lavrov emphasized that such military activities in the Far North increase the risks of incidents that could trigger an armed confrontation with catastrophic consequences.

Russia has the largest military presence and infrastructure in the Arctic, and China has started to increase its activity in the mineral-rich area, often in partnership with Moscow. Norway, Russia's neighbor, recently expanded a military brigade headquartered in the Arctic, the latest move by a NATO nation to bolster its defense footprint in the region following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
