NATO's Arctic moves pose 'direct threat' to Russia, foreign minister Lavrov says

In a recent article published by Russia's foreign ministry, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that NATO's expansion in the Arctic directly threatens Russia's security. This comes as NATO members intensify their presence in the region following Russia's conflict with Ukraine. In February, NATO launched the Arctic Sentry mission to strengthen its foothold in the far north, demonstrating a growing concern from the alliance towards the Arctic due to its tensions with Russia and former US President Donald Trump's attempts to acquire Greenland.

Russia, which possesses a naval fleet including nuclear-armed submarines in the Arctic, views the region as its sphere of interest. Additionally, the country is actively developing a shipping route that would connect with Asian nations. Lavrov, serving as President Vladimir Putin's long-standing foreign minister, referred to NATO military exercises in the region as "aggressive" and asserted that such activities in the Far North directly jeopardize Russia's security.

He warned that the risks of incidents potentially leading to armed confrontation with catastrophic consequences are escalating in his article published by the Russian foreign ministry.

Russia currently holds the largest military presence and extensive military infrastructure in the Arctic, while China has also ramped up its activity in the mineral-rich area, often in collaboration with Moscow. Norway, Russia's neighbor, recently bolstered a newly established military brigade based in the Arctic, reflecting the increasing defense presence of a NATO nation in the wake of the ongoing war in Ukraine, which Russia initiated in 2022. Moscow has previously discredited claims that it poses a threat to NATO.
