Alleged drug trafficking: Nigerians deserve answers on Tinubu’s past – Peter Obi

Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu's efforts to prevent the disclosure of records related to his educational background in a foreign court, stating that Nigerians deserve answers on matters of public interest. In a statement posted on his social media page on Monday, August 31, 2026, Obi criticized the President for attempting to shield documents concerning his early education, including primary and secondary schooling, from scrutiny.

"It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest," Obi said. He questioned why such foundational education matters should remain unresolved or be addressed through legal channels.

Obi emphasized that Nigerians deserve "clear, credible, and verifiable explanations" on these matters, especially when educational records have already been provided. He also expressed worry about the implications such disputes could have for Nigerian youth, calling on the Presidency to embody integrity, accountability, and transparency.

"The nation's highest office should exemplify integrity, accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership," Obi stated, adding that Nigeria is more than any individual and that the Republic's integrity must always supersede personal interests.
