Faded Road Markings Highlighted as Safety Concerns as Schools Reopen

The Orihuela City Council is repainting road markings and enhancing signs around schools ahead of the upcoming academic year, but this raises a critical question: why were such essential safety measures allowed to deteriorate so severely initially? The school year commences on September 9, anticipating a significant surge in children, parents, pedestrians, and vehicles utilizing roads near educational institutions.

The council claims that this program will enhance visibility and ensure safer commutes during the school day's start and end times. Nevertheless, road markings should be consistently maintained year-round, not hastily repainted as a political PR initiative just prior to pupils returning to school. Discrepancies in the visibility of white lines guiding motorists around junctions and roundabouts have become apparent throughout the municipality.

Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, heavy traffic, inferior-quality materials, and insufficient upkeep have resulted in many markings appearing faded, damaged, or nearly completely obliterated. The state of pedestrian crossings is of particular concern. When the white stripes of a zebra crossing merge with the road surface, drivers may fail to notice pedestrians until it is too late.

The risk is heightened at night or when glare from low sunlight diminishes visibility. Clearly marked crossings and road lanes are indispensable components of traffic safety. Permitting them to fade presents an unnecessary hazard for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians—especially children en route to and from school. Mónica Pastor, Councillor for Citizen Security, stated that the current repairs aim to improve signage and bolster safety at locations that will soon face a substantial influx of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The Infrastructure and Coastal departments of Orihuela are concurrently conducting maintenance around schools on the Orihuela Costa through the municipal firm Ecoplan. Although the improvements are welcome, road safety cannot be regarded as a seasonal endeavor. The council should never have permitted the condition of markings around schools—or anywhere else in the municipality—to reach such a dire state.

Regular inspections and maintenance must now supersede the customary last-minute rush before the school gates open once more.
