Russia continues attacks on Kyiv as air raids sound on and off in Ukraine's capital

Russia continued its persistent drone attacks on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, for a third night in a row, on August 29-30, 2021. Authorities issued frequent air-raid alerts in the city as fires were reported. The latest strikes followed hundreds of drones launched at Ukraine throughout the day, with the majority targeting Kyiv. In the Obolonskyi district of Kyiv, a Russian drone crashed between residential buildings around 10 p.m. local time, causing a fire on the second through fifth floors of a 12-story residential building.

Emergency services rushed to the scene. Another downed drone ignited a fire in a green area in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district, also requiring emergency response. On August 30, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the roof of a non-residential building in the Holosiivskyi district caught fire after debris fell on it. At 6 a.m. local time, first responders continued battling fires across the city, but all blazes from the previous day had been extinguished, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service.

The recent night of Russian strikes followed an attack the previous evening on August 29 that killed a 2-year-old girl in the Obolonskyi district and injured eight others, with three of them hospitalized. On August 28, Russian strikes on Kyiv Oblast resulted in at least 37 deaths and 42 injuries, including four children, triggering explosions and a large fire at a storage facility.
