Tens of thousands mourn King Harald V in Oslo as Norway enters a new royal era

Norwegian citizens flocked to the Royal Palace in Oslo on Saturday to pay their respects to the late King Harald V, who passed away at the age of 89. The mourners, who braved the pouring rain, laid flowers and condolence cards at the palace entrance, which was lined with a sea of colorful blooms. Palace workers removed excess bouquets from the south side of the palace to ensure clear pathways, while dried cards were collected to preserve the heartfelt messages for posterity.

As the rain continued, Roni Ervik, a 46-year-old mourner, expressed his gratitude to Harald V and the royal family, placing his hand over his chest. He also paid tribute to the late king on behalf of his family, who hails from western Norway. Harald V's death marked the beginning of a new era, as his 53-year-old grandson Haakon ascended to the throne as King Haakon VIII. The new monarch adopted the motto "All for Norway," a tradition dating back to his great-grandfather.

Throughout the day, Haakon was expected to fulfill his royal duties, including addressing the people of Norway in his first speech as king, either later that day or in the coming days. A choir was scheduled to perform at the Royal Palace Square, and Haakon would also meet with key figures such as the speaker of Norway's parliament, the chief justice of the Supreme Court, and the presiding bishop of the Lutheran Church of Norway.
