NPP to announce position on proposed constitutional amendments

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will soon reveal its stance on proposed amendments to Ghana's 1992 Constitution. The party shared this news in a statement dated August 28, 2026, following a thorough review of the Constitution Review Committee's report and the government's position paper. The NPP had been formally consulted during the national constitutional review process and submitted feedback to the CRC, which subsequently presented its findings to the government.

The party's Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee has now drafted the NPP's position paper, which will be presented to party presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the National Executive Committee for approval. Once adopted, the NPP will communicate its official position to the Ghanaian public. The party emphasized its commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and orderly constitutional review process that safeguards democracy, fortifies constitutional institutions, and fosters political stability and growth.

The government had previously expressed its position on the CRC's recommendations on July 30, 2026. Among these proposals were a five-year presidential and parliamentary term, the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, an expansion of Parliament to 300 members, a reduction of the minimum presidential age from 40 to 35, and the allowance of dual citizens to contest parliamentary elections.

Additionally, the government supported proposals to abolish the death penalty and grant equal voting rights to members in good standing of political parties in selecting parliamentary and presidential candidates. The NPP's upcoming position is anticipated to clarify which of these constitutional changes the party endorses, rejects, or seeks to modify.
