‘Political Links Don’t Give Licence To Kill’: Sushma Andhare On Shilpa Gaware Case In Pune

Pune-based Shiv Sena leader Sushma Andhare demanded stringent action in the Shilpa Gaware death case, emphasizing that political connections, wealth, or influence cannot grant someone immunity from wrongdoing. Gaware, 42, died at her home in Wakad on August 27, with police initially stating her death as a suicide. Her family accused her husband and in-laws of prolonged physical and mental harassment, raising doubts about her death's circumstances.

Andhare drew parallels between the Shilpa Gaware case and the recent Vaishnavi Hagawane case, expressing her sorrow over the loss of another woman. She firmly stated that no accused should be shielded by influence or wealth. When asked about political links involving the families in the case, Andhare reiterated that such connections should have no bearing on the investigation. She emphasized that political parties must recognize the public's scrutiny when responding to cases involving accused with political ties.

Andhare called for strict and unbiased action in the case, urging lawyers to consider their wider social responsibility while defending accused individuals. She also appealed for a stronger legal system to ensure timely investigation, prosecution, and punishment. Andhare, who had previously worked on the Vaishnavi Hagawane case, stressed that Shilpa Gaware should not be remembered only through the accused's identities, but as the daughter of all Punekars.

She vowed to continue standing with the family, both as a woman and as a Punekar, and called for swift investigation and justice.
