NPP to announce position on proposed constitutional amendments

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is poised to declare its stance on forthcoming constitutional amendments following a thorough internal evaluation of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) report and the government's response to its recommendations. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Chairman of the NPP Policy Coordination Committee, announced that the party's Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee has concluded its review of the CRC report and the government's Position Paper dated July 30, 2026.

The NPP will subsequently submit its position paper to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party's presidential candidate, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) for their deliberation and adoption.

The NPP stated that it will communicate its official position on the proposed constitutional amendments to the Ghanaian public once the party's leadership has considered and adopted the position paper. The party emphasized that it had been formally consulted during the national constitutional review process and had submitted its position to the CRC, which subsequently presented its report to the government.

Oppong Nkrumah highlighted that the NPP's internal review aligns with the party's commitment to inclusive and consultative decision-making. He reiterated the party's dedication to a transparent, inclusive, and orderly constitutional review process that safeguards Ghana's democracy, fortifies constitutional institutions, and fosters political stability and national development.

However, the NPP has yet to disclose which proposed amendments it supports, rejects, or intends to modify. The party's forthcoming position is anticipated to contribute to the political discourse surrounding the proposed changes to Ghana's constitutional framework and may impact efforts to achieve political consensus on the reforms.
