Mahama tasks Zanetor to put science, technology at the centre of national development

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the newly appointed Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, to prioritize science, technology, and innovation as the cornerstone of Ghana's development plans. The President emphasized that the ministry must bolster scientific research, foster innovation, assist local inventors, and enhance cooperation among universities, research centers, and the private sector.

This directive was formally communicated to Dr Agyeman-Rawlings upon her official swearing-in ceremony at Jubilee House on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Mahama urged the ministry to establish platforms for young Ghanaians to apply scientific and technological advancements to key economic sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, energy, climate resilience, manufacturing, and the digital economy. He stressed that bolstering partnerships between academics and industry would enable the transformation of scientific knowledge and local inventions into tangible solutions for addressing Ghana's developmental hurdles.

The President also tasked Dr Agyeman-Rawlings with ensuring the nation's growth generates employment and broadens opportunities without endangering the environment for future generations. He cautioned that Ghanaians expect transparency, accessibility, accountability, and promptness from public officials. Furthermore, Mahama encouraged the new Minister to heed expert counsel, respect the institutions under her jurisdiction, and ensure the judicious use of public funds.
