2027 campaigns won’t disrupt N’Assembly duties — Akpabio

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reassured Nigerians that political campaigns leading up to the 2027 general elections will not impede the National Assembly's legislative duties. Akpabio made these remarks to journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, according to a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom.

His comments came in the wake of his meeting with key stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress, where President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno were endorsed for re-election in 2027.

Despite the increasing political activities and preparations for the upcoming elections, Akpabio emphasized that lawmakers would continue to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities. He stated that members of the National Assembly have the capability to balance their political campaigning with their legislative duties. Akpabio suggested that campaigns could be scheduled in the afternoons or evenings, allowing lawmakers to focus on their legislative work in the mornings.

Akpabio clarified that electioneering and legislative responsibilities are separate entities and that the commencement of campaigns would not hinder the National Assembly's core functions, which include lawmaking, oversight, and representation. He assured that the National Assembly will continue to make laws that address the needs of the people, and that concerns about the impact of campaigns on legislative duties are unfounded.
