IIT Delhi Student Protest: Director Warns Of Disciplinary Action Over 'Threatening Slogans' Amid Probe Into Student’s Death

IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee has issued a stern warning against students engaging in disruptive activities, such as raising threatening slogans, during the ongoing protest related to the alleged suicide of a 31-year-old MSc student. The protest has intensified on Thursday night, with demonstrations spilling over to campus residential areas.

In an email to students on Friday, Banerjee emphasized that the use of unsavoury, humiliating, and threatening language in slogans compromises the safety, privacy, and peace of faculty members and their families, including children and elderly dependents. The Institute will take disciplinary action against individuals disrupting the functioning of the campus, including residential areas, classes, academic activities, and other functions, Banerjee stated.

The student demonstrations have been ongoing for six consecutive days, with demands for an independent inquiry, accountability for institute officials, and compensation for the deceased student's family. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, recently reconstituted the external probe panel investigating the student's death, led by retired Delhi High Court judge Mukta Gupta.
