IIT Delhi director flags 'unsavoury, threatening' slogans amid protest over student's death

Rangan Banerjee, the IIT Delhi director, has warned that students who disrupt the campus by raising threatening slogans during the ongoing protest over a student's death could face disciplinary action. The protest escalated on Thursday night, with demonstrations extending to campus residential areas. Banerjee's email to students on Friday disclosed that a group of protesters had displayed unsavoury, humiliating, and threatening language during their rally outside faculty housing between 10.30 PM and 12.30 AM.

Such conduct not only endangers the safety and privacy of faculty members and their families, including children and elderly dependents, but also disrupts the peaceful functioning of the campus, which Banerjee emphasized would not be tolerated. The institute will enforce disciplinary measures against those who interfere with the campus activities, including educational programs and other operations.

This came as student demonstrations entered their sixth day since Kumar's death, with demands for an independent inquiry, accountability for institute officials, and compensation for the student's family. The external probe panel, now led by retired Delhi High Court judge Mukta Gupta, was reconstituted by IIT Delhi earlier in the day.
