Germany plans to blame Russia for foiled Leipzig drone attack, Politico reports

Germany is reportedly considering formal accusations against Russia for a failed drone attack that occurred at Leipzig/Halle Airport, according to Politico. This potential move, which also involves imposing sanctions on Russian entities, is expected to be announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz's administration within the next week, possibly in conjunction with a new European Union sanctions package, the news outlet reported on August 29, citing three sources familiar with the situation.

The incident, which took place on August 4, involved a drone allegedly loaded with explosives and intended to target a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane, which is also utilized for transporting military equipment.

Earlier reports from media investigations, alongside U.S. intelligence assessments, have already linked the attack to Russia. The officials involved mentioned that the ensuing response might encompass tougher sanctions or expanded arms deliveries to Ukraine. However, a spokesperson for the German government clarified that an official attribution would be released once the investigation's results have been thoroughly evaluated.

In previous statements, Merz had warned that the Leipzig incident would result in significant consequences, emphasizing that Germany was facing serious threats and that those behind hybrid attacks would face repercussions. Reports from U.S. intelligence officials on August 26 indicated that the explosive drone exhibited characteristics consistent with production by Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU).
