Faf shares heartfelt Nepal flood message: ‘Devastating to see what has happened’

Former South African cricket captain Faf du Plessis expressed his heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the people of Nepal, who were recently hit by devastating floods. Du Plessis took to social media to recall his own experience in Nepal, praising the kindness of its people and extending his thoughts and prayers to those affected by the disaster. He expressed his deep sorrow at the destruction caused, highlighting the widespread loss of life and missing persons.

Indian cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Irfan Pathan also joined the chorus of support for the Nepalese people. Tendulkar specifically addressed the families of loved ones still missing, emphasizing the unbearable uncertainty they face. Pathan, on the other hand, offered his condolences while acknowledging the powerful visuals of the disaster, urging Nepal to find strength and overcome this challenging phase.

The floods were triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border, causing a torrent of water, mud, and debris to sweep through central Nepal. The disaster has resulted in extensive damage to homes, vehicles, roads, bridges, and hydropower projects. Rescue operations are underway, with thousands of personnel deployed in affected areas to rescue those stranded or trapped in hard-to-reach locations. However, the challenging terrain and continuing rainfall have complicated these efforts.

In response to the crisis, India has extended significant assistance to Nepal. The South Asian nation has dispatched 57.6 tonnes of relief material, along with an 11-member team comprising medical personnel and tunnel rescue experts. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been commended for his exceptional generosity, with Nepal's Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle praising his response.

Wagle stated that India would provide "very generous assistance for reconstruction" as Nepal transitions from rescue operations to recovery and rebuilding. The Nepal Army has also played a crucial role in the rescue operation, mobilizing thousands of security personnel to aid in the search and rescue efforts.
