Chatsworth scientist inspires next female generation

Professor Tricia Naicker, a scientist based in Chatsworth, South Africa, has been recognized for her inspiring journey from a curious schoolgirl to an award-winning researcher. Her work on combating antibiotic resistance has national and global significance. Awarded the Distinguished Young Woman Researcher in Natural and Engineering Sciences at the South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA) in Johannesburg, Naicker's research focuses on developing compounds to restore the effectiveness of existing antibiotics.

Her journey began with a spark of interest sparked by chemistry experiments in school, encouraged by her physics teacher and supportive parents. Despite challenges related to the male-dominated nature of the field and the long years of study, Naicker remains committed to her research, which has led to Phase 1 clinical trials. Her work aims to create a "shield" against bacterial defenses, allowing antibiotics to function properly again.
