287 Indians still missing after Nepal flash floods, 120 others crossed over to Nepal from China: MEA

As Nepal grapples with the aftermath of devastating flash floods, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported on Saturday that 287 Indian nationals remain missing, alongside 128 others of Indian origin with varying nationalities. Meanwhile, 88 Indians were rescued on Saturday, and 120 Indian nationals crossed over into Nepal from China.

The government plans to arrange their return to India. In Rasuwa, a hydropower project, four Indians were rescued, and will arrive in Kathmandu later. Six forensic expert teams from India are set to arrive in Kathmandu to aid DNA analysis of mortal remains, as Nepalese authorities struggle to identify bodies. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) confirmed at least 626 deaths and over 2,400 people still missing from the catastrophic floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border.

An Indian reconnaissance team arrived in Kathmandu late on Friday and began work on Saturday in the affected area, following the recommendation of a specialized recce team. A further tunnel rescue team is expected to arrive in Nepal later on Saturday night. India continues to support Nepal's efforts, with a recent delivery of 10 tonnes of relief supplies, including portable generators, dignity kits, food packets, and water purification tablets.

Another flight carrying relief material and a tunnel rescue team is set to depart for Kathmandu later on Saturday night.
