The Pentagon’s measures against Anthropic were ‘illegal and baseless’, says a federal judge

A federal judge has declared the Pentagon's actions against artificial intelligence company Anthropic to be "illegal and baseless," according to a recent ruling. U.S. District Judge Rita Lin ruled that the government's designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk in February was an improper and retaliatory move, stemming from the company's criticism of the Department of Defense's stance on AI use.

The Pentagon has accused Anthropic of endangering national security and potential misuse in areas such as mass surveillance and autonomous armed drones. Lin argued that the government's actions were driven by a desire to set an example for Anthropic's "arrogance" in criticizing the administration, rather than a legitimate concern about the company's products.

The 59-page ruling emphasized that neither the Constitution nor federal statutes permit the government to impose penalties solely based on Anthropic's opposition to the Administration's views. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei welcomed the decision, stating that the company continues to work with the government to harness AI technology for national security benefits.

The dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon has intensified discussions about the role of AI in warfare and mass surveillance. The company is seeking to challenge other Pentagon rules aimed at labeling it as a supply chain risk, while also pursuing a separate case in the federal appeals court.
