South Korea, U.S. Explore Water Breakthrough

On August 27, Yoon Seok-dae, president of Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water), met with Christophe Beck, chairman and CEO of Ecolab, at the Han River Basin Headquarters in Gwacheon to explore opportunities for innovation in water management for advanced industries. Beck, who is also co-chair of the Water Resilience Coalition, a global water security alliance, assessed South Korea as a strategic nation due to its advanced semiconductor infrastructure.

The pair discussed the potential of AI-driven water management systems, such as real-time data platforms and AI purification plants, to address water-related challenges and ensure stable water supply. They identified the present period, marked by water demand from advanced industries colliding with supply instability due to climate change, as a "golden time" to determine the future of water management.

The meeting aimed to establish a long-term cooperation platform focusing on diversifying water sources through a Water-Mix approach, securing water quality for semiconductor processes, and conducting joint research and demonstration projects in high-tech water treatment technologies. Both companies agreed to collaborate on domestic and international water management for advanced industries, carbon reduction through water and energy savings, and the development of cutting-edge water treatment capabilities.

Working-level officials from both sides plan to identify specific projects through regular communication. Yoon highlighted the meeting as the beginning of cooperation between leading water companies from South Korea and the United States, emphasizing the integration of public and private-sector resources to support water supply for future strategic industries.

Beck praised South Korea's semiconductor competitiveness and expressed his commitment to addressing global water resource challenges through the capabilities of Ecolab and K-water.
