Fortify port security to sustain 24-Hour Economy initiative - Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana urges IGP

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to fortify security at Ghana's ports to safeguard merchandise, traders, and other stakeholders while supporting the government's 24-hour economy initiative. Following recent robbery incidents at the port, the association expressed concerns over the safety of cargo, commercial activities, and livelihoods.

At a press conference on Wednesday, August 27, IEAG Executive Secretary Samson Awingobit advocated for increased security presence and tighter surveillance at the ports. The call for enhanced security came after reports of criminal activities, including instances where suspected miscreants were apprehended while attempting to offload cargo within the port jurisdiction.

The IEAG emphasized that a secure and well-fortified port environment is crucial for sustaining round-the-clock operations, which is integral to the success of the 24-hour economy program. The association stressed that security must be treated as a vital component of efforts to extend operations beyond regular working hours. They called for frequent security patrols and the establishment of a dedicated standby team to respond swiftly to emergencies and security threats within the port enclave.

The IEAG believes that improved security would not only protect valuable merchandise but also bolster confidence in Ghana's port system, thereby contributing to a more stable and efficient import and export environment.
