Archaeologists uncover ancient landscape matching bible’s description of Jesus’ burial site

Italian archaeologists have unearthed an ancient landscape beneath Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre that aligns with biblical accounts of Jesus' crucifixion and burial site. The excavations, conducted during restoration work at the fourth-century church, unearthed evidence of a once-funerary and agricultural landscape. Lead archaeologist Francesca Romana Stasolla of the University of Rome La Sapienza revealed the team found an abandoned quarry, cultivated fields, rock-cut tombs, and an ancient garden.

These discoveries correspond with the Gospel of John, which describes a garden with a new tomb near Jesus' crucifixion site. The researchers found olive trees and grapevines dating back to the time of Jesus' death, and rock-cut graves aligning with descriptions in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The tomb itself was carved directly into the rock, as mentioned in the Gospels.

While the findings don't definitively prove the tomb belonged to Jesus, they highlight the site's significance to generations of Christians who worshipped there.
