Archaeologists uncover ancient landscape matching bible’s description of Jesus’ burial site

Italian archaeologists have unearthed an ancient landscape beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem that mirrors biblical accounts of Jesus' crucifixion and burial site. The team, led by Francesca Romana Stasolla from the University of Rome La Sapienza, discovered evidence of a former funerary and agricultural landscape.

This includes an abandoned quarry, cultivated plots, rock-cut tombs, and what appears to be an ancient garden. The archaeologists found evidence such as olive trees and grapevines, dating to around the time of Jesus' death, which corresponds with the Gospel of John describing a garden near the crucifixion site. Additionally, the team identified rock-cut graves, aligning with descriptions in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke that Jesus' tomb was carved from rock.

The discoveries suggest that the area was recognized as a sacred burial location long before the current church was built. While the findings do not definitively confirm the tomb's association with Jesus, the excavation offers a glimpse into the history of Christians who revered the site.
