A sea of Jalur Gemilang: Terengganu housewife turns home into Merdeka tribute

DUNGUN, Aug 29 — A housewife from Bandar Al-Muktafi Billah Shah has transformed the front of her residence into a vibrant tribute to the country, adorning it with the Jalur Gemilang flags to celebrate the upcoming 2026 National Day on Aug 31. Kitam Mat Deris, 55, began decorating her home with Jalur Gemilang flags of various sizes earlier this month, aiming to ignite the festive spirit of Merdeka and instill a patriotic sense among residents, especially the younger generation.

Despite her age, Kitam remains committed to showcasing her love for the nation, believing that even small acts like her decorations can foster the spirit of independence. Her efforts have extended to involving her family, particularly her husband Che Musa Ismail, 74, and daughter Murni Safiqah Che Musa, 32, who contributed ideas and helped purchase the decorations online to save both time and money.

Kitam spent over RM500 on flags and decorative items, emphasizing that the true value lies in the spirit of patriotism, not the cost. Her home was chosen to represent Block C in a beautification contest organized by the Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah) to complement the National Day celebration. Kitam's active participation in beautifying her home with the Jalur Gemilang and tending to ornamental plants and herbs showcases her dedication to spreading the Merdeka spirit to younger generations and creating a cheerful atmosphere for the upcoming celebration.
