Wang Yi calls on US to ‘overcome obstacles’ ahead of Xi-Trump meeting

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has implored the United States to assist in "eliminating interference and surmounting obstacles" to high-level diplomatic interactions as the nation anticipates President Xi Jinping's projected visit to America next month. Engaging with US Ambassador David Perdue in Beijing on Wednesday, Wang emphasized that both parties should implement the Xi-Trump consensus, concentrate on a positive agenda, and address discrepancies to sustain ties that are "steady, thriving, and enduring," according to China's foreign ministry.

In a subsequent social media update, Perdue characterized the deliberations as part of "preparations for President Xi's reciprocal visit to Washington." Wang's plea follows an anticipated September 24 summit between Xi and US President Donald Trump at the White House. Acknowledging "numerous risks and challenges" in the bilateral relationship, Wang stated that "under the guidance of the two heads of state, both sides are striving to establish a productive China-US relationship of strategic stability."

Perdue echoed a similarly accommodating tone, praising Trump's May trip to China as "extremely successful" and expressing Washington's readiness to "enhance communication, expand cooperation," and arrange "crucial high-level interactions in the forthcoming phase." Ambassador Perdue asserted that the two nations should cultivate a productive and stable relationship "based on respect and reciprocity," as reported by the Chinese foreign ministry.
