Wang Yi calls on US to ‘overcome obstacles’ ahead of Xi-Trump meeting

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has implored the United States to assist in eliminating interference and surmounting hurdles to high-level exchanges as both nations gear up for President Xi Jinping's imminent arrival in the US. During a meeting with US Ambassador David Perdue in Beijing on Wednesday, Wang emphasized the importance of putting the Xi-Trump consensus into action, concentrating on a positive agenda, and addressing differences to maintain ties that are "stable, healthy, and sustainable," according to China's foreign ministry.

Perdue later shared on social media that the discussions were part of the preparations for President Xi's anticipated reciprocal visit to Washington. Ahead of the anticipated September 24 meeting between Xi and US President Donald Trump at the White House, Wang highlighted "various risks and challenges" in the relationship. He stated that "under the guidance of the two heads of state, both sides are working to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability."

Perdue echoed a similar optimistic tone, praising Trump's May visit to China as "very successful" and affirming Washington's readiness to "strengthen communication, advance cooperation," and get ready for "important high-level interactions in the next stage." The US ambassador stressed the need for a constructive and stable relationship built "on the basis of respect and reciprocity," as per the Chinese foreign ministry.
