The foreigners missing in Nepal’s flash floods

Nepal has experienced devastating flash floods that have resulted in at least 160 deaths and left hundreds of foreigners missing, according to official figures. The floods swept through Nuwakot district, impacting the Trishuli Bazar area. The international community is represented among the missing, with hundreds of hikers and climbers from around the world in the country.

India has the highest number of missing foreigners, with 142 nationals from the neighboring country reported as missing. They were traveling with three agencies: Samrat Tours & Travels, Leaf Holiday, and Himalayan Glacier. Ukraine reported 53 of its nationals missing, including a group of 46 Ukrainian tourists. Australia confirmed 34 Australians are among the missing, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressing concern for their loved ones.

Malaysia reported 17 Malaysians missing, with 11 believed to be in the Rasuwa district. Twelve UK citizens were unaccounted for with the Alpine Eco Trek agency, while nine hydropower workers from South Korea were also out of contact in the same area. Japan expressed concern over media reports of five Japanese nationals missing, and South Africa reported four South Africans missing with the same Alpine Eco Trek agency.

The United States reported three US citizens missing with Fishtail Tours & Travels. Portugal confirmed one woman and one man missing, and the Netherlands reported one Dutch citizen unaccounted for. Italy's foreign ministry reported two of its nationals and their guide stranded upstream from a landslide, receiving aid but unsure if any Italian citizens were affected.

Several tour groups had missing foreigners whose nationalities had not been confirmed, including 77 from Trekkers Society, 26 from Kailash Journey, and eight from Richa Tours & Travels. Additionally, Nepal reported 93 of its own citizens missing.
