Search for 1,000 missing after deadly Nepal-Tibet floods

Rescue operations intensified on the Nepal-Tibet border to locate more than 1,000 people missing following devastating floods and landslides that claimed at least 165 lives. The catastrophe left entire villages obliterated, with survivors recounting harrowing tales of their homes being washed away. A video from the Chinese side of the border depicted a monstrous wall of mud and debris demolishing a multi-story building, engulfing buses and cars in its path.

The disaster, believed to be triggered by a glacial collapse, unleashed a terrifying wall of water and mud that swept through villages on the course of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. Nepalese authorities have recovered 162 bodies, while Chinese officials reported three fatalities in Tibet and 558 people, including 260 foreigners, still missing.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) described the rush of debris as "like an inland tsunami," traveling nearly 170 kilometers down the Bhote Koshi valley. Nepal's tourism ministry reported 468 tourists, 393 of whom were foreigners, unaccounted for, along with numerous families whose members were rescued but remain missing.
