Search for 1,000 missing after deadly Nepal-Tibet floods

A massive wall of mud and debris swept through a building on the Nepal-Tibet border, killing at least 165 people and leaving over 1,000 missing. Suspected glacial collapse triggered the disaster, sending a wall of water and mud down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, affecting seven Nepali districts and surrounding areas. Foreign tourists, including 260 from foreign nations, were among the missing, with Nepal's tourism ministry reporting 468 tourists unaccounted for as of a day after the disaster struck.

The US Geological Survey confirmed that the event was a glacial collapse, not an earthquake, and warned of the potential for a second flood due to a blockage in the river. Rescuers from both Nepal and China scrambled to locate survivors and recover bodies, with the Nepali Army utilizing helicopters and the Chinese government deploying nearly 800 emergency workers and 150 vehicles.
