Rescuers search for survivors after devastating Nepal flood

Rescue teams scoured for survivors Thursday following a devastating mud and rock avalanche that struck a river in the Himalayan region along Nepal's border with China's Tibet. The catastrophic flooding swept through mountain towns and valleys, resulting in numerous casualties. Around 340 foreigners, out of over 400 missing tourists, were among those affected by the disaster, which hit a popular trekking and pilgrimage area.

Around 157 bodies have been recovered so far, according to Nepal police. Videos showed massive waves of water and debris sweeping away dozens of people. Survivors recounted harrowing tales, with one 68-year-old survivor recounting how he tried to save his wife but she was swept away. Many victims were on a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar, a sacred site revered by various religions.

The U.S. Geological Survey later determined that the disaster was caused by a collapse of a glacier's lower part triggered by seismic energy generated by the flow of debris. Nepal's tourism board spokesperson revealed that 47 of the missing tourists were from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain, and 24 from Canada.

The U.N. Secretary-General mobilized teams and personnel to support affected communities. China reported three deaths and 265 missing in Gyirong, while Australia reported 34 missing. South Korea stated that eight of its nationals working on a hydropower plant were missing, and Malaysia and Japan also reported missing nationals. Rescue efforts were ongoing as authorities feared higher casualties and massive destruction.
