Replit’s new default: Auto mode picks the best model for each task

AI coding platform Replit is now making its new "Auto mode" the default setting for all users, automatically selecting the best model for each task. This intelligent model routing system considers factors like quality, speed, and cost when making its decisions. Replit explains that the rise in per-token costs for models and the increasing capabilities of cheaper, smaller models have created a need for more cost-effective solutions.

The Auto mode feature is now available across every Replit account, although users with Core and Pro subscriptions can still manually select models if they prefer. Earlier this year, Stripe acquired OpenRouter for $8 billion and Ramp launched Router.com to route requests to the lowest-cost, high-performance model. SpaceX-owned Cursor also launched its own router, claiming to deliver comparable performance at lower costs.

Meta is reportedly developing an internal router called "Switchboard." Replit's president, Michele Catasta, attributes the push towards routing to the significant price differences between models and the growing performance of smaller models. Replit has been testing Auto mode in beta for months, ensuring it learns from first principles to optimize the system.

Within Replit, Auto mode is designed to work seamlessly for Enterprise customers, allowing administrators to limit the models used in each workspace while still benefiting from automatic routing.
