President Mahama cuts sod for seven-storey car park and commercial complex at Airport

President John Dramani Mahama ceremonially laid the foundation for an ambitious seven-story car park and commercial complex set to be constructed at Terminal 3 of Accra International Airport. This project aims to offer around 2,030 covered parking spots, alongside a range of commercial, entertainment and hospitality amenities, designed to enhance the passenger experience and bolster airport infrastructure.

At the sod-cutting event, Mahama emphasized the government's objectives extend beyond merely boosting passenger numbers, aiming to position Ghana as a favored destination, a convenient transit hub and a competitive aviation center in Africa. He noted that passenger traffic at the airport has grown from 1.8 million in 2022 to an anticipated 2.5 million in 2025, necessitating the expansion of airport infrastructure to accommodate this rising demand.

Mahama reiterated the government's dedication to enhancing aviation infrastructure and improving connectivity, urging stakeholders in the sector to maintain professionalism, discipline and courtesy. He unveiled that several airport development initiatives are being funded entirely by the financial reserves of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), without any direct government expenditure.

The projects under way include the building of a new control tower for GCAA, the renovation of Terminal 2, the creation of a transfer concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3, and the development of a new parking complex and related commercial facilities at Terminal 3.

The President highlighted these investments as part of a broader strategy to modernize Ghana's aviation infrastructure and strengthen the country's standing as a significant aviation hub in Africa.
