Durban pilgrim recounts relief and heartbreak after narrowly missing Nepal flash floods

Devighat, Nepal - Rescue efforts were underway on Thursday to locate hundreds of individuals missing after a catastrophic flood ravaged communities along the Nepal-China border, according to local police. The flood, triggered by a massive glacier collapse, surged through villages, engulfing people and reducing buildings to rubble.

Videos captured the terrifying scene of individuals fleeing as water levels rose, ultimately submerging them and causing extensive destruction. Officials reported that at least 353 lives were lost in the disaster, while over 1,300 people remain unaccounted for, including numerous foreigners and pilgrims. The aftermath left hundreds more displaced across the Himalayan region.

The area, characterized by steep slopes and verdant valleys nestled below the world's highest peaks, is particularly susceptible to such natural disasters. Climate change has exacerbated the issue, leading to a rise in melting glaciers. Images from the affected Nuwakot district in Nepal depicted buildings submerged in mud following the torrential deluge.

Debris littered tree branches and power lines, while vehicles were completely buried. Some survivors were visibly shaken and in need of immediate assistance.
