Tarkwa youth demonstrate in support of Gold Fields’ mining lease renewal

Hundreds of residents, youth and community leaders gathered in Tarkwa for a peaceful demonstration, advocating the renewal of Gold Fields’ mining license. The demonstration took place in the streets of Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, with participants carrying banners that highlighted the positive impact of Gold Fields’ community initiatives.

Speaking to reporters, an Assembly Member, John Nsoh, highlighted the significant contributions made by the mining company to the area, mentioning projects like the T&A Park, the Bogoso Junction to Damang road, and roads connecting Budo City to Bogoso Junction. Nsoh warned that the non-renewal of the lease could have a negative impact on Tarkwa and the municipality, describing Gold Fields as "the light of Tarkwa".

Another demonstrator, John Davies, emphasized that Gold Fields had made a greater impact than other mining companies in the region and called for the government to give the lease to Gold Fields, citing concerns about the treatment of workers by local operators. The demonstrators urged the government to renew the mining license, stating that it would help maintain jobs, community development projects, and economic activity in Tarkwa and surrounding areas.
