Catastrophic floods kill over 360 in Nepal and Tibet, with more than 1,400 missing

DEVIGHAT, Nepal - Rescue workers and military helicopters combed the Nepal-China border Thursday for the hundreds of people still missing after a catastrophic flood. The flood, triggered by a glacier collapse, swept through communities with a torrent of water and mud several stories high. Graphic videos captured residents fleeing as the floodwaters engulfed them, demolishing buildings and bridges.

At least 360 people lost their lives, according to police, with over 1,400 others still unaccounted for, including numerous foreigners and pilgrims. The region's steep slopes and fertile valleys, home to many of the world's highest peaks and remaining glaciers, are particularly susceptible to flooding and landslides. Climate change has led to an increase in melting glaciers.

Images revealed second-floor buildings in Nepal's severely impacted Nuwakot district coated in mud following the rapid flow. Riverbanks and village streets were drenched in mud, while debris was seen hanging from tree branches.
