Zahari Sarip was appointed as the 16th Speaker of the Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN Johor) on this day. (Picture from Facebook) During the First Meeting of the 16th Session of the Johor State Legislative Assembly, the proposal for Zahari, who is 59 years old, was put forth by the Chief Minister, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, during the opening of the First Meeting of the 16th Session of the Johor State Legislative Assembly at the Sultan Ismail Building, Iskandar City.

Mr. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Member of Parliament for Machap, proposed the name of Zahari before the vote, and there were no other nominees. Zahari will replace Puad Zarkashi, who held the same position for the 15th term from April 2022 to the dissolution of the DUN at the beginning of June last year. Prior to his appointment, Zahari served as the Chairman of the Johor Agricultural, Basic Agriculture and Rural Development Committee and held the seat of DUN Buloh Kasap since 2018.

In the PRN Johor 16 on July last year, Zahari retained the Buloh Kasap DUN seat after defeating Pakatan Harapan candidate Noraziah Mohd Razit with a majority of 8,600 votes. In his acceptance speech after being officially elected and given the Speaker's robe, Zahari expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the Chief Minister and all Members of Parliament.

He pledged to fulfill this trust with utmost dedication and commitment. The election was a great honor and trust. I will perform my duties with the best of my abilities as I have sworn, he said. He also expressed gratitude to Mohd Puad and former Deputy Speaker Samsolbari Jamali for their contributions throughout their service in the 15th term of the DUN session.
