US Gaza envoy warns of ‘point of no return’ if Israel-Hamas ceasefire collapses

On August 27, the high representative for Gaza in US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace issued a stark warning of an "inevitable point of no return" should the Israel-Hamas ceasefire falter. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, currently in the midst of a challenging re-election campaign, had publicly opposed the latest installment of a US-backed initiative aimed at de-escalating the ongoing Gaza conflict.

The collapse of the truce would spell disaster, with no clear path to recovery, no administration to restore order, and no resources left on the ground to rebuild. This dire scenario was articulated by Nickolay Mladenov, the envoy speaking to the United Nations Security Council.

A ceasefire agreement signed by Hamas on July 30 stipulated that weapons would be disarmed under the watchful eye of the International Stabilization Force, an emerging body tasked with deploying to Gaza if tensions subside. Led by US Major General Jasper Jeffers, this force was tasked with overseeing the disarmament of weapons in accordance with the agreement.

Hamas had pledged to turn over its arsenal to a new governing authority, a proposal that prompted skepticism from Netanyahu but was welcomed by Trump as a potential turning point.

However, Mladenov cautioned that there remained a secondary risk to the ceasefire. Hamas had committed to suspending all military activities, a pledge that still needed to be fulfilled in its entirety. Every weapon still in circulation, every tunnel under construction, and every obstructed convoy could set the peace process back and provide ammunition for those advocating for renewed hostilities.
