Nigeria Needs Competence, Not Political Loyalty, Declares Ex-Cross River Gov, Duke

Former Cross River Governor, Donald Duke, has underscored the need for competence and integrity over political loyalty in Nigeria's current predicaments. Duke, who is contesting for the presidency in the 2027 general election with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), asserts that his administration, if elected, would prioritize merit and capacity in filling key government roles, effectively putting an end to the pernicious practice of rewarding political patronage.

Duke, who served as governor from 1999 to 2007, stated that his tenure in public service is a testament to his resolve to leave institutions and the state in a better condition than he found them.

During an interview, Duke emphasized that the end of politics should herald the beginning of genuine governance, with the president tasked with assembling the most capable team to drive the nation's development agenda. He firmly stated that political supporters and campaign loyalists should not hold sway over who gets appointed into government, asserting that public offices should be reserved for individuals with the necessary competence and integrity to deliver tangible results.
