540 foreign tourists from more than 30 countries are missing in Nepal's flash floods

More than 500 foreign tourists, including Americans, Canadians, and Brits, are missing after severe floods hit the Nepal-Tibet border region. The flooding began on August 26 when a surge of water, mud, and debris entered Nepal from Tibet via the Bhote Koshi River. The Nepal Tourism Board reported that over 350 people have died, with more than 1,300 missing, including 540 foreign nationals and 127 Nepalis.

The missing travelers come from more than 30 countries, with 178 from India alone. The US State Department has deployed a disaster response adviser and provided $500,000 for aid, while the Canadian government is ready to offer consular assistance. The floods affected communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, with mass destruction scenes captured on CCTV footage.

Nepal's disaster management authority reported that 27 foreign tourists had been rescued by Thursday afternoon, and two army helicopters supported rescue operations. Authorities advised travelers to avoid flood-affected areas and postpone trips until conditions are deemed safe.
