Xbox announces a disc-to-digital feature that will allow users to digitize their existing physical games, rolling out for Xbox Insider testers on August 31 (Tom Warren/The Verge)

Last month, The Verge revealed that Xbox was developing a feature allowing game discs to function like Nintendo Switch 2's Game-Key Cards, but potentially more advantageous. Xbox's gaming division officially introduced the feature at Gamescom 2026, explaining that game discs would grant users digital access to the game, playable on any Xbox-connected device.

The announcement specified that the feature functions on most Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles, with the added bonus of compatibility with PC through its Play Anywhere PC cross-platform capability and Xbox Cloud Gaming, when supported. This could potentially benefit thousands of games, although publishers must agree to participate.

The rollout will initially be exclusive to Xbox Insiders starting August 31, followed by a wider release to the aforementioned consoles in the coming months. This announcement comes as Xbox maintains no presence in Malaysia, leaving its expansion efforts in the region stalled. The move is appreciated, even if it doesn't benefit every gamer.

However, it's crucial to note that the feature may not extend to the upcoming Microsoft console, Project Helix, which reportedly lacks a disc drive. Microsoft could also reconsider the feature if it affects their video game division negatively, following criticism over the recent PlayStation announcement.
